I work with a lot of images generated by software created by IBM. Back in the late 1980s IBM created a compression similiar to G3 MR. I have attached 2 documents that explain the encoding. In the first attached document, ibm_mmr.pdf, it contains the original specification for IBM MMR compression dated 1 January 1987. On pages 4-5 the algoithm is explained. In the second attached document, ibm_mmr_2.pdf, it contains an IBM patent dated 6 September 2005. On pages 24-25, there is a review of the G3 MH, G3 MR, G4 MMR and IBM MMR algorithms. With the information that I have provided hopefully it would not be too difficult to implement since it is very similiar to G3 MR. I could also provide sample images for testing. See http://download.osgeo.org/libtiff/doc/ibm_mmr.zip.
I have uploaded sample data from Philip at: http://download.osgeo.org/libtiff/data/ibm_mmr_sample.zip
Bugzilla is no longer used for tracking libtiff issues. Remaining open tickets, such as this one, have been migrated to the libtiff GitLab instance at https://gitlab.com/libtiff/libtiff/issues .
