It would be great if the preview had a default basic context that helps users
understand the spatial orientation of the data. I know Paul has added the extent
of preview parameter, but I think there should be an addition option for a
default context and this context would be placed below the preview layer. this
default context should be able to be turned off/on.

just a comment on this.

it would have to be configurable in the widget tag what context, if any, to use
for this purpose.

allowing the end user toggle the refrence layer wisibility is a good idea too.
