Assefa, are you sure that we don't support any of that, I thought that we did support the named styles?
Daniel, you are right. I checked the code and we do support the first case where an online URL is given in the context file.

Right. Filter (and scale) can be applied through SLD (note that the xlink namespace below is incorect). Also, the next context version will (should?) include: sld:MinScaleDenominator and sld:MaxScaleDenominator elements as Layer element children, so you can get/set scale that way as well.
